What is computer memory (RAM)?

Random Access Memory (RAM) acts as your computer’s “short-term” workspace. It temporarily stores the data your processor needs right now, providing instant access to the applications and files you are actively using.

More RAM allows your system to run faster and smoother when multitasking, editing large files, or playing modern games.

Other factors that impact your computer’s memory performance:

• DDR5 vs. DDR4: DDR5 is the current standard, offering significantly faster speeds and better power efficiency than older DDR4 RAM. Note that motherboards only support one or the other; you cannot upgrade a DDR4 system to DDR5 later without replacing the motherboard.
• Speed (MT/s or MHz): Higher memory speeds allow your processor to access data faster. This can visibly improve frame rates in CPU-intensive applications and games.
• Dual-Channel Configuration: Installing RAM in pairs (e.g., two 16GB sticks instead of one 32GB stick) doubles the communication bandwidth between the RAM and the processor, significantly boosting overall system speed.

What is computer storage?

Your storage drive is your computer’s long-term memory. It permanently holds your operating system, documents, games, and media, even when the PC is turned off.

More storage means you can keep more large files and applications installed simultaneously. We measure capacity in gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB), where one terabyte equals roughly 1,000 gigabytes.

Other factors that impact your computer’s storage performance:

• NVMe M.2 SSDs (Solid State Drives): The fastest modern storage standard. These tiny drives plug directly into the motherboard, delivering lightning-fast boot times, near instant game loading screens, and rapid file transfers.
• SATA SSDs & HDDs: While an ultra-fast NVMe SSD is essential for your primary “boot” drive where Windows and your main games live, older SATA SSDs or traditional mechanical Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) can be added as secondary drives if you need massive, affordable archiving space for old photos or backups

What is a graphics card?

Your graphics card (GPU) renders the images, videos, and 3D graphics you see on your monitor. It is the single most critical component for demanding applications like gaming, video editing,and AI.

Discrete graphics cards include their own dedicated processor and memory. As a result, they deliver vastly superior performance, allowing for higher resolutions and smoother frame rates.

Other factors that impact your computer’s graphics experience:

• Resolution & FPS: Higher resolutions (like 4K) demand more power to maintain smooth frames per second (FPS).
• Power Supply (Wattage): High-end cards draw more power and require a robust power supply unit (PSU).
• Video Memory (VRAM): Crucial for loading high-resolution textures in modern games and 3D scenes.

What is a power supply?

The power supply unit (PSU) is the heartbeat of your computer. It converts the alternating current (AC) from your wall outlet into the stable, direct current (DC) power that your individual components need to function.

A high-quality PSU does more than just turn the PC on; it protects your expensive hardware from electrical surges, ensures system stability under heavy loads, and dictates what upgrades you can make in the future.

Other factors that impact your computer’s power delivery and safety:

• ATX 3.1 & PCIe 5.1: Designed to safely handle the massive power spikes of modern GPUs. They feature the direct cables required for new cards, eliminating the need for bulky adapters.
• 80 PLUS Efficiency: Ratings (like Bronze, Gold, or Platinum) measure energy efficiency. An 80 PLUS Gold rating is the ideal standard, meaning less wasted electricity, less heat, and quieter operation.
• Modularity: Fully modular units let you connect only the cables your build needs. This reduces internal clutter, significantly improving cooling airflow and the overall look of your PC.
